On a sunny morning in December, I headed off to Jennie Lou Art’s studio at GRACe in North Denver to document her abstract painting process. In a small rectangular space, Jennie’s desk and painting carts fit along the walls in a perfect arrangement. Her floral and abstract artwork hung on the white walls and larger canvases leaned on the furniture.

After talking for a few minutes, Jennie began to set up her blank canvas and paints. She swiped a royal blue color onto the canvas in broad, uneven strokes. As time passed, Jennie added a warm reddish orange color and turned the painting 90 to 180 degrees in order to study and try and make sense of the random lines.

My overall goal was to document Jennie’s abstract painting process from beginning to end. By becoming a fly on the wall, I learned a lot about the artistic timeline of a painting and what it’s like to study your own work.
